    If you receive a check in the mail from the Veridian Group out of Canada - know that it’s a scam!

    A 20-year-old from Frankfort was ready to cash in on $4,500…but his dad, Larry Hoffman, who works at the post office, knew right away that it was a fake.

    The bank claims to be affiliated with Citi Financial Services. The check has a bank number on it and has all the markings of a legitimate check.

    Hoffman is worried about the people who may fall victim to this scam.

    “They try and hook people who aren’t aware,” Hoffman said. “I work for the U.S. Postal Service. We have videos and seminars on scams - especially to the elderly. The elderly are very prone to this. They’re victims all the time. If you go on the U.S. Postal Service, there are all sorts of warnings about email scams and mail scams.”

    The fake company asks that you call a phone number, deposit the check, and send them a portion of the money.

    Recently a Bellingham, WA, customer sent a letter thanking and complimenting Mt. Baker Station Carriers Jim Sands and Annelise Pysanky.

    "I inadvertently dropped two church collection box donation envelopes along with my letters in a USPS 'blue collection box'. In each donation envelope I had a $20.00 bill. Not only did I receive the donation envelopes back a few days later, but the money was inside.

    Although the cash wasn't much, what made his day was a "renewed belief" in honest, hard working people.

    Honesty and integrity are still some of our best calling cards.

    Love 'em or hate 'em, you have to admire the sheer tenacity of the big, six- by 11-inch Comcast postcard. The offers may change but the pitch is relentless. It seems that every week a new billboard juts out from my stack of bills and catalogs.

    The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has approved a non-binding resolution last week calling on the state of California and Congress to create a Do No Mail registry — the first time lawmakers in the US have voted on creating a policy to allow citizens to block receiving unsolicited mail. No states have yet passed any kind of Do Not Mail legislation, although several have measures pending, and it is unclear whether the California state legislature will take up the issue.

    With no signs of economic recovery in sight, the U.S. Postal Service is taking bold actions in response to its ongoing financial crisis. Today the Postal Service announced it would be closing six of its 80 district offices, eliminating positions across the country and offering another early retirement opportunity. These actions are expected to save the Postal Service more than $100 million annually.

    The six offices closing — located in Lake Mary, FL; North Reading, MA; Manchester, NH; Edison, NJ; Erie, PA, and Spokane, WA — house only administrative functions and will not adversely affect customer service, mail delivery, Post Office operations or ZIP codes. The functions of these six offices will be assumed by 10 district offices within close proximity.

    Additionally, administrative staff positions at the district level nationwide are being reduced by 15 percent. More than 1,400 mail processing supervisor and management positions at nearly 400 facilities around the country also are being eliminated and nearly 150,000 employees nationwide are being given the opportunity to take an early retirement.

    In the past year the Postal Service has taken very aggressive cost-cutting actions, including:

    * Cutting 50 million workhours;
    * Halting construction of new postal facilities;
    * Negotiating an agreement with the National Association of Letter Carriers that adjusts letter carrier routes to reflect diminished volume;
    * Freezing salaries of all Postal Service officers and executives;
    * Instituting a nationwide hiring freeze;
    * Reducing authorized staffing levels at postal headquarters and area offices by at least 15 percent;
    * Selling unused and under-utilized postal facilities;
    * Adjusting Post Office hours to better reflect customer use; and,
    * Consolidating mail processing operations.

    The Postal Service is streamlining operations and improving efficiencies across the board in order to protect its ability to provide affordable, universal mail service. By modifying networks, consolidating functions and restructuring administrative and processing operations, the Postal Service is adapting to meet the evolving needs, demands and activities of its customers.

    An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 149 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes, six days a week. It has 34,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services, not tax dollars, to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.

    The Denver Post Office, with the assistance of the CO/WY District Marketing Department, provided a successful service to the attendees of the 2009 American Library Association convention last month.

    While librarians are typically known for their propensity for using media mail, more than 40 percent of services sold were Priority Mail.

    The three-day total revenue take was more than $18,000

    FedEx and UPS services were available at other booths, which only served to demonstrate to customers first hand the value of shipping USPS.
